Kyle Smith ’14 publishes op-ed about the need to talk about guns

Kyle Smith ’14, a government major at Connecticut College, has published an op-ed in the Bangor Daily News about the need to talk about to talk about irresponsible gun use.

Read Smith’s op-ed.

“The issue of guns is one I’ve always been torn about, and that’s because it’s so layered,” wrote Smith, who adds that he grew up in an area of Maine where hunting is common and many people use guns responsibly.

Smith wrote that he supports the right of citizens to own guns, but that he also hopes his future children won’t need armed security guards at school to feel safe.

“I don’t want them to live in a world of fear, like the one I feel like we’re being pulled into,” he wrote.
