Mavrovic Wins Mile at Wesleyan for Camel Men
Pevear & Gildersleeve Set School Records for Women
MIDDLETOWN, Conn.--The Connecticut College track and field teams competed in the Wesleyan University Invitational Saturday afternoon. Results
Alex Mavrovic (Thetford Mines, Quebec) paced the Camel men with his victory in the mile. In the women's invitational, Samantha Pevear (Somersworth, N.H.) and Sara Gildersleeve (Sharon, Mass.) set school records for the Camels.
Mavrovic posted a winning time of 4:19.97 for the Camels, qualifying for the New England Division III Championship as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship (ECAC) in the process.
Mike LeDuc (Canton, Conn.) placed fifth in the mile with a time of 4:25.67 to qualify for the New England Division III Championship. Sophomore Ian Rathkey (Old Lyme, Conn.) chipped in with a sixth place finish in the 600 meter run, earning an invitation to the New England Division III and ECAC Championships with a time of 1:25.09 for the Camels.
In the 3000 meters, Patrick Dermody (Erieville, N.Y.) posted a time of 8:54.57 to finish sixth, stamping his ticket to the New England Division III Championship.
In the 60 meter hurdles, Dan Smoot (Lexington, Mass.) set a school record with a time of 9.78 seconds for Connecticut College.
In the distance medley relay, the Camel foursome comprised of Doug Wright (Darien, Conn.), Geoff Phaneuf (Woonsocket, R.I.), Alex Mavrovic and Mike LeDuc teamed up for a second place score with a time of 10:39.17.
In the women's invitational, Samantha Pevear set a school record and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, four inches, earning an invitation to the New England Division III Championship. In the 60 meter dash, Sara Gildersleeve set another school record, qualifying for the New England Division III Championship with a third place finish in 8.11 seconds.
Junior Sarah Matthews (Westwood, Mass.) had her ticket stamped for the New England Division III Championship with a third place finish in the 600 meter run, logging a time of 1:44.39.
The Camel women had several other scorers Saturday. Kim Bolick (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Kerry Dermody (Erieville, N.Y.) placed second and sixth in the one mile run with respective times of 5:30.76 and 5:36.90. In the 60 meter hurdles, Carmen Palumbo (Wilmington, Mass.) posted a time of 10.13 seconds en route to a seventh place scoring.
Lianne Swanson (Franklin, Mass.) finished eighth in the 5k with a time of 20:06 for Connecticut College.
The Camel women scored in two relay events. In the 4x400 meter relay, Sara Gildersleeve, Christine Roundtree (Saint Albans, N.Y.), Michelle Wesley (Millwood, N.Y.) and Sarah Matthews placed fourth with a time of 4:18.61.
Kerry Dermody, Taylor Havican (Stoneham, Mass.), Lianne Swanson and Ally Bonito (Guilford, Conn.) posted a time of 13:46.66 en route to their fifth place showing in the distance medley relay.
