NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College sophomore Mike LeDuc of Canton, Conn. has qualified for the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in the 5000 meter run. LeDuc posted a time of 14:33.17 to place second in a photo finish at the Eastern College Athletic College (ECAC) Championship held at The Armory in New York City Friday night. LeDuc eclipsed his previous indoor school record, besting his mark by more than five seconds, earning All-ECAC Honors for his scoring. LeDuc will join Head Track & Field Coach/Head Women's Cross Country Coach Ned Bishop and Assistant Head Track & Field Coach/Head Men's Cross Country Coach Jim Butler for a trip to Grinnell College this weekend, the site of the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. "Mike ran an incredible race this past Friday at the ECAC Championships knowing he had to improve his previous best time and his standing on the National list which at that time was 16th (13 qualify for Nationals," LeDuc's Coach Jim Butler said. "Once again, he showed why his teammates and I refer to him as 'Big Meet Mike', displaying an amazing kick to place second in the race, and as it would turn out, running a time which would result in his grabbing the 13th and last NCAA National Championship qualifying spot. It would not surprise me at all if Mike places in the top eight on Saturday, and earns All-American honors for the second time in his career at Connecticut College." Last spring, LeDuc posted a time of 9:03.72 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to finish sixth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Ohio Wesleyan University to cap off a memorable rookie season as an All-American for Connecticut College. The performance moved him to #1 on the Connecticut College performance list. Brian Murtagh '09 of Rowley, Mass. held the record with his All-America finish in 9:08.41 at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship. On the cross country trails, LeDuc has garnered first team All-NESCAC honors in each of his two seasons with the Camels and was recognized as the 2010 NESCAC Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year.
