Gill Honored as Counsilman Hunsaker/Division III National Swimmer of the Week
NEW LONDON, Conn. --Connecticut College sophomore Sam Gill of Springfield, Ill. has been honored as the Counsilman Hunsaker/Division III Swimmer of the Week as selected by the CollegeSwimming.com web site.
Gill helped lead the 22nd ranked Camels (9-2) to their seventh straight win, a 169.5-110.5 triumph at Bates College Saturday.
Gill triumphed in both the 50 and 100 yard fly with respective times of 23.54 and 50.91 seconds and added a third win in the 100 yard freestyle, setting a facility record with a time of 47.65 seconds. The sophomore standout also assisted on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:26.84).
Connecticut College Head Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Coach/Director of Aquatics Marc Benvenuti was pleased with Gill's performance in another successful weekend of Camel swimming and is looking forward to what should be another exciting championship season for Camel swimming fans.
"Sam's hard work is paying off," Benvenuti said. "He is swimming faster at this point in the season than ever before and I am eager to see what he can do at NESCACs and NCAAs."
Next up for Gill and the Camel men is the aforementioned New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Swimming & Diving Championship, which will take place at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. from Feb. 23-26.
The Connecticut College women's swimming and diving team, ranked 19th in the latest national poll, will visit Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. for the 2012 NESCAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship that will run from Feb. 16-19.
