Nichols, Hormel Lead Camels Past Bears
NEW LONDON, Conn.-(Coast Guard Sports Information) Junior Ryland Hormel scored with 5:42 left in second half leading Connecticut College to a 1-0 win over host Coast Guard in the annual battle for the Whale Cup between the two New London rivals.
Hormel blasted the ball in the upper right corner of the goal from 20 yards out to break the scoreless tie as he took a pass from classmate Billy Hawkey.
Coast Guard (2-2) had a great chance to send the game into overtime with just 36 seconds left when sophomore Matthew Bogdan drilled a shot off a direct kick but Connecticut College goalkeeper junior Max Nichols made a brilliant one handed save deflecting the ball away and the Camels improved to 1-0-1 on the season.
Nichols made seven saves to register the shutout while Coast Guard sophomore Richie Burns made five saves in goal for the Bears. Connecticut College outshot the Bears 12-10.
Connecticut College had the first few chances to get on the board in the second half, but Burns made a diving save to rob junior Kevin Burt of a point range shot in the 57th minute. Hawkey had a great look in the 62nd minute, but his shot was wide.
The Bears best chance before Bogdan's shot in the closing seconds, came with 15:30 left when again it was Bogdan who headed a ball off a corner, but Nichols made the save.
