Swimmer Sarah Murphy '11 earns Academic All-America honors

Sarah Murphy '11, a four-year member of the Connecticut College swimming and diving team, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Women's at Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Murphy, a native of of Williamsburg, Va., earned third team accolades in the College Division. She is the College's third selection to the Women's at Large Team. Beret Remak '07, an All-American and NCAA Quarterfinalist for the women's tennis team, was the program's last honoree.

Kate Kovenock '05, an NCAA swimming champion in the 50 yard freestyle, was named to the squad on back to back occasions in 2004 and 2005. The Women's At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo. Murphy was a three-time national qualifier and eight-time All-America selection at Connecticut College. At the 2011 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship in Knoxville, Tenn., Murphy garnered All-America honors in five events, leading the Camels to a 14th place finish. In her most impressive swim, Murphy placed third in the 200 yard butterfly with a record setting time of 2:01.35. During Centennial Commencement weekend, Murphy received the Anita L. DeFrantz Award at the senior athletic awards luncheon.

The Award is given annually to the members of the graduating class whose athletic ability, leadership and sportsmanship best exemplify the qualities of Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz '74. DeFrantz was inducted into the Capital One Academic All-America® Hall of Fame in July of 2010. A nine-time All-NESCAC performer, Murphy holds or shares 10 Connecticut College records. In the classroom, Murphy has been equally impressive. A Dean's Honors student, Murphy received her degree in sociology-based human relations and earned a minor in psychology. In August, Murphy will begin working for MATCH Corps, an Urban Education fellowship program, at a charter middle school in Boston. - By Will Tomasian
