Every year in the rush to leave campus for the summer, students inevitably run out of space in the car and leave unwanted items like furniture, lamps and electronics behind in their residence houses. The College's Environmental Model Committee created the Spring Give 'n' Go to make sure those items are put to good use.

The event gives students the chance to give their gently used items a new life by donating them to a variety of local organizations like the Women's Center of Southeastern Connecticut, Helping Hands in New Haven, Habitat for Humanity's ReStore and the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. It also reduces waste by redirecting these items to those who need them. "We're trying to keep these items in use in the local community," says Residential Area Coordinator Colleen Bunn, who is organizing the drive. "They really benefit the organizations that are serving people in the area."

Beginning today, students can bring donations to the collection areas located in every house on campus. Collections will continue until May 18, when items will be sorted for pick up. Student volunteers will be collecting items from the residences and sorting them into storage units. Students can also bring their items to the storage units themselves. "Last year was a great event," says Bunn. "This year we have more student volunteers to help out. They'll even be driving around campus in a truck as students move out to encourage them to donate unwanted items."
