Author Michael Kimmel to discuss the path from boyhood to manhood
Sociologist and gender studies expert Michael Kimmel would like to welcome you to "Guyland."
After interviewing more than 400 subjects between the ages of 16 and 26, Kimmel says today's young men find themselves navigating a different social world than their fathers and grandfathers - a "Guyland" with a more complex path from adolescence to adulthood. The research resulted in his best-selling book, "Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men."
Kimmel, a professor of Sociology at SUNY Stony Brook, will discuss his work in a talk of the same name on Monday, Feb. 21, at Connecticut College.
In the book, Kimmel describes a buddy culture and extended adolescence that requires today's young men to shut down emotionally. "Guyland could save the humanity of many young men - and the sanity of their friends and parents," feminist Gloria Steinem said of the book.
Kimmel is also the author of " Manhood in America: A Cultural History," Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity," "The Politics of Manhood," " The Gender of Desire" and "The History of Men."
Kimmel's talk is at 4:30 p.m. in the Ernst Common Room in Blaustein Humanities Center on Monday, Feb. 21.
