NESCAC Quarterfinal: #8 Wesleyan University 6, Connecticut College 5

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Jon Killeen (Derry, N.H.) scored the go-ahead goal with 2:58 remaining to lead eighth seeded Wesleyan University (8-7) to a 6-5 victory against top seeded Connecticut College (14-2) in a NESCAC Championship Quarterfinal played on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Sunday. Killeen had five points with two goals and three assists and Lonny Blumenthal (Ballwin, Mo.) chipped in with three goals and an assist for the upset minded Cardinals, who will meet Tufts University in a semifinal match up at Medford, Mass. next Saturday at noon. Connecticut College senior Steve Dachille (Garden City, N.Y.) scored twice for the Camels and moved into a second place tie with Tom Gately ´91 on the program´s all-time goal scoring list with 127 career markers. Eric Doran (Pennington, N.J.) added a goal and assist for the Camels. Connecticut College, who was ranked #2 in the latest North Regional NCAA Ranking released April 28, will be strongly considered for an at-large berth in the upcoming 2010 NCAA Men´s Lacrosse Championship. Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead when Killeen assisted Blumenthal for a goal with 1:19 remaining in the opening quarter. But Doran buried his 23rd goal of the season as he beat the horn with one second left and the two sides were knotted up in a 2-2 tie after one. Dachille provided the lone tally of the second quarter with his 44th goal of the year at 6:40. Mark Mangano (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was the feeder, supplying his team-leading 15th assist with a pass from behind the cage and the Camels carried a 3-2 advantage into the break. But in the third quarter, the Cardinals out-scored the Camels 3-0 to take grasp of a 5-3 lead. Blumenthal tied the game at three in an unsettled situation with 9:49 remaining. Ramanan Sivalingam (Philadelphia, Pa.) collected a ground ball near midfield to start the Cardinals in transition. The visitors added another goal at 7:17 before Blumenthal scored his third of the day with 4:55 left in the third. However, the lead would not last as the Camels battled back to score the next two goals. With 9:41remaining in regulation, Doran set up John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) in front of the cage for a goal from point blank range. Later on in the quarter with 7:19 to play, junior Ryan Hayes (Darien, Conn.) forced the game´s fourth tie at 5-5 with his 20th score of the season. But Killeen was able to put the Cardinals on top for good with 2:58 remaining, netting his 25th goal of the season and the visitors were able to hold on for the 6-5 win. Rookie net-minder Mark Simmons (East Hampton, N.Y.) made 11 saves with five ground balls in the victory for Wesleyan. Sophomore Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) stopped 11 shots for the Camels. Sean Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) corralled a team-best four ground balls for Connecticut College. Matt Ward (Boxford, Mass.) was 6-for-14 in face offs for Wesleyan. Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won 7-of-12 face offs while Dan Gallagher (Wayne, Pa.) was 1-for-2 for the hosts.
