Christopher Notches 100th Point with Five Goals, Four Assists in the Win
ORLANDO, Fla.--Connecticut College (1-1) battled back from a 5-3 halftime deficit to hand previously unblemished McDaniel College (4-1) its first loss in overtime, 13-12. Senior Sara Christopher exploded with nine points, including the 100th of her career on four goals and five assists.
Sophomore net-minder Ashleigh Kowtoniuk (Johnstown, Pa.) made 15 saves in a strong effort between the pipes. Hope Barone (North Kingstown, R.I.) frustrated the opposition with 11 draw controls, three ground balls and a pair of scores while sophomore Paige Cowie (Hudson, Ohio) contributed with two second half scores for the winning side.
Christopher scored 1:05 into the second half to get the ball rolling for Connecticut College. With 15:41 remaining in regulation the Camels took their first lead since the opening moments of the contest when Barone caromed a bounce shot off the grass and into the back of the net to make it a 9-8 game.
Later on in the half, McDaniel freshman Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md.) countered with back-to-back scores to put the Green Terror back on top 12-11.
But with 4:05 to go, the Camels scored the equalizer. Junior Abby Hill (Stoneham, Mass.) was awarded with a free position shot but was able to execute a pump fake on the keeper and connect with Christopher just outside the crease for a goal.
Kowtoniuk made a game-saving stop with 35 seconds left to preserve the tie.
Sophomore Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winner with 1:12 remaining in the first overtime frame. Christopher was able to draw in a pair of defenders and dish to Driscoll for the go-ahead score.
