Som says many women can identify with Obama's style

Which fashion designer has the “right stuff” to design Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown?

It’s still a secret, but there was no shortage of ideas when Women’s Wear Daily asked designers to submit sketches. Peter Som ’93 won high marks for the timeless elegance of his dress, but an online poll at fashion site zentrend.com, a shimmering blue number by Michael Kors takes top honors.

You can see all the sketches and still cast your vote for Som. Som, a graduate of the Parsons School of Design who has worked with Bill Blass, Calvin Klein and Kors, told the Times Online of London that Obama’s fashion choices are important. “What she wears has a huge impact on fashion,” he said. “From day one she has shown her own modern style that many women can identify with or aspire to.”

Will you be at the inauguration?
We’d like to talk with you about it. Please e-mail Rachel Harrington at rharring@conncoll.edu. And watch for an article in the March issue of CC:Connecticut College Magazine by Richard Semiatin ’80, an assistant professor of political science at American University. He’ll be offering live commentary for AP Television News on Tuesday.
