Receptions, Head of the Charles and book talk draw Camel crowds

From a book signing to a rowing regatta – the last month brought a variety of opportunities for alumni, parents and friends of the College looking to connect.

The Head of the Charles took place Oct. 17-18, with over 50 members of the College community – including alumni who graduated in years ranging from 1949-2009 – stopping by Connecticut College’s tent in Reunion Village. View photos.

A bit of snow on Sunday didn’t stop parents, students and alumni from cheering on competing Camels, including the women’s rowing team in the collegiate fours; men’s rowing coach, Ric Ricci, in the grand-master singles 50+; Mary “Liz” Stone ’49, who has been racing at the Head of the Charles for 15 years, in the women’s senior-veteran singles 70+; Alison Thornton ’88 in the women's master eights; and Beth Cockrell ’05 in the women’s lightweight singles. A few days earlier on Oct. 15, Andrew Pessin, professor of philosophy at the College, headed to Porter Square Books in Cambridge, Mass., to read from and sign copies of his new books, “The God Question: What Famous Thinkers From Plato to Dawkins Have Said About the Divine” and “The 60-Second Philosopher: Expand Your Mind on a Minute or so a Day!”

The event, which was open to the public, was a draw for parents, alumni, and former students of Pessin. No matter what their connection though, Ellen Ramsbottom Jarrett ’78 P’13, who manages Porter Square Books, said that everyone seemed to know about Connecticut College.

“The place has a great reputation in this area, that’s for sure,” said Jarrett.

More recently in New York City, CAMEL networking receptions continue to draw large crowds, with about 50 alumni catching up over cocktails and appetizers at Havana Central in Times Square Nov. 12. On that same day, Connecticut College alumni also reconnected during a reception at the Naples Yacht Club in Florida. View photos from both events.
