VPN - Virtual Private Networks

To access campus resources that are not available on your remote network, like administrative, academic, labs or the software library, you will need to connect to a VPN (virtual private network).

If you are using a College-issued computer, the VPN client should be installed on your machine.

Once you've connected to the VPN, you may open a browser and login and access your normal resources as well as restricted resources.

Am I eligible to use VPN?

If you are a current student, faculty or staff member at Connecticut College, you are eligible to use VPN. If you are not in these groups and still need to use VPN, please contact us for help.

Why do I need VPN?

Campus resources like the software library, files on shared departmental servers, remote access to college machines, print services on campus, administrative tools like Banner, your Conn email via a client such as Outlook, access when you are having problems with web certificates or settings in your browser, a secure connection when using an untrustworthy connection. Students studying abroad need VPN to pre-register for classes, access Banner etc. 

I can't get Fortinet VPN Client because I have no network access. What do I do?

VPN is not a method for accessing the Internet. To get on the Internet, you must contact an Internet service provider. VPN lets you use dial-up, DSL, or cable connections. You must get the connection first, then download the client. If you don’t have a connection but still want to install the client, please contact us.

What group should I use?

All academic resources like shared departmental drives (on Yew) and the software library can be accessed through the Academic group. Resources such as Banner and administrative department shares (on Tamarack) can be accessed through the Admin group. DB-Users allows direct database access to EMS and Adirondack housing software. The SATA group allows professors on Study Away/Teach Away to access resources restricted in certain countries.

Why does connecting take such a long time?

Your client is negotiating an encrypted connection with the VPN concentrators. Agreeing on your identity and then pushing Conn's network configuration to the client does take a perceptible length of time, but it's necessary for the service to work.

How long can I stay connected with Fortinet VPN Client?

VPN sessions are limited to 8 hours. After 8 hours, the connection closes automatically. To continue working, connect again. You will  need your Camel ID and password again. There is no limit on how often you can connect through VPN.

What operating systems support Fortinet VPN Client?

Fortinet VPN Client works with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Intel-based Mac OS X and Linux.

Can I use VPN on a mobile device?
