onStage at Connecticut College's Centennial celebration season kicks off Sept. 9

NEW LONDON, Conn. - In honor of Connecticut College's 100th anniversary, the 2011-2012 season of onStage at Connecticut College will celebrate the past and pay tribute to alumni. "Connecticut College has a distinguished history of presenting some of the world's greatest artists - those at the pinnacle of their careers and others who are just beginning," said Robert Richter, director of arts programming at the college. "Some of the artists we've invited for the 2011-12 season have direct ties to Connecticut College; others are performing works that connect to our unique culture as a place that values ideas and artistic expression."

The season opens with Sept. 9 and 10 performances by jazz singer and 1979 Connecticut College alumna Mary Foster Conklin. Conklin, a third-generation alumna, will showcase her unique approach to the Great American Songbook with a focus on the music from the years she and her family members attended the College. Her performance, "The Melody Lingers On - Three Generations of American Popular Song," is at 8 p.m. in Tansill Theater. Other highlights of the season include a Sept. 30 performance by the Limón Dance Company, which will include the "The Emperor Jones," a piece based on a play by Eugene O'Neill and performed in Palmer Auditorium in 1957; the Mingus Big Band on Oct. 22; L.A. Theatre Works' "The Rivalry" on Nov. 4; Conor Lovett's solo performance of "Moby Dick" on Nov. 13; the Brentano String Quartet's "Fragments: Connecting Past and Present" on Feb. 17, the AXIS Dance Company on March 31 and the Asphalt Orchestra on April 5.
