onStage at Connecticut College presents L.A. Theatre Works' 'The Rivalry' Nov. 4
onStage at Connecticut College will present L.A. Theatre Works' "The Rivalry," Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium. "The Rivalry" brings to life the Abraham Lincoln-Stephen Douglas debates using riveting dialogue from the original transcripts. The story is told in the unique live radio theater-style performance of the Grammy Award-winning L.A. Theatre Works.
Called a "national theatrical treasure" by the Philadelphia Inquirer, L.A. Theatre Works has been the foremost radio theater company in the United States for more than two decades and has performed live in more than 150 cities and towns across the country. In "The Rivalry," the company explores the multiple 1858 senatorial race debates between "Honest Abe," a political newcomer, and "The Little Giant," an incumbent political powerhouse and clear favorite. The debates set a standard for American political discourse and had lasting impacts that set the stage for Lincoln's 1860 presidential election. The play was written by radio pioneer Norman Corwin, who died earlier this week at the age of 101.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the college's founding, this season of onStage at Connecticut College celebrates the history of the arts at the college and alumni contributions to the field. Robert Richter, director of arts programming, said this performance is especially exciting because the role of Lincoln is played by talented actor Robert Parsons, a 1980 graduate of Connecticut College.
Tickets are $28, $24 and $20 for general admission; $25, $21.50 and $18 for seniors or faculty and staff of the College; $14, $12 and $10 for students.
