An Afternoon of Arts

Connecticut College is combining two annual events into "An Afternoon of Arts" on May 6, and the public is invited.

"Jazz in the Courtyard" is the spring concert by the Jazz Ensemble and Traditional Jazz Band, performed - as the title indicates - in Castle Court, the art-filled courtyard between Cummings Arts Center and Palmer Auditorium. The groups, under the direction of Gary Buttery, will cover works by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Irving Berlin and George and Ira Gershwin.

This year, "Jazz in the Courtyard" will be followed by the opening of the 2011 Senior Thesis Exhibition, in which 19 senior art majors display pieces in mediums ranging from porcelain and metal to new media and wintergreen transfers. The exhibition will run through May 22.

"We're always happy to host members of the community and even more so this year as we celebrate our Centennial," said Margaret Thomas, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music. "And what better way to spend a spring afternoon than taking in some music and art on our beautiful campus?"

"An Afternoon of Arts" is free and open to the public. "Jazz in the Courtyard" begins at 4 p.m. and the exhibition kicks off at 5 p.m. with a talk by the student artists. (In case of rain, "Jazz in the Courtyard" will take place in Evans Hall in Cummings Arts Center.)
