Celebrate the holidays with music and dance at Connecticut College

"BLUR: Dance Department Concert" is Dec. 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium.

Celebrate the holidays with music and dance, spend an afternoon with an award-winning animator and take an in-depth look at ecosystem evaluations at Connecticut College this December. The following events are open to the public and free, unless otherwise noted.

- Now-Dec. 14: "Spectrum of Black and White: The Art of Masako Inkyo," a Japanese calligraphy exhibition, Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library.

- Now-Dec. 16: "Shauna Merriman: Peripheries," an exhibition of ceramic sculpture and mixed media in the Cummings Arts Center.

- Dec. 1: "Strings Recital," a student performance directed by adjunct instructors of music Alvin Wong and Daniel Lee, 6 p.m., Fortune Hall, Cummings Art Center.

- Dec. 1: "Live in Concert: Don Monopoli Presents The Learning Station." This live holiday musical extravaganza for children features The Learning Station, a group known for its educational music performances, 6:15 p.m., 1962 Room, College Center at Crozier-Williams. Tickets are $5.

- Dec 2: "An Afternoon with Award-Winning Animator John Canemaker," featuring a Q&A with Canemaker and screenings of his animated shorts, 4:30 p.m., Olin Hall Room 014.

- Dec. 2: "John Sloan: Spectatorship and Gender Roles in the Urban Life," opening reception for this student art exhibit by Rebecca Dolfi '11, 5 p.m., Fanny Wetmore Gallery, Cummings Arts Center.

- Dec. 2: "Race to Nowhere" film screening, 6:30 p.m., Oliva Hall, Cummings Arts Center.

- Dec. 5: "Make We Joy," an annual community celebration of the winter solstice featuring music, dance and drama. Community talents from many backgrounds and cultures create an entertaining and unique seasonal event enjoyed by all ages. The performance is free, though donations will be accepted at the door. Seating is limited, so plan to arrive early. Shows are 4 and 7 p.m., Harkness Chapel.

- Dec. 6: "Student Voice Recital," 4 p.m., Fortune Hall, Cummings Art Center.

- Dec. 6: "Federico Garcia Lorca and the Poetics of the 'Known' Homosexual and the 'Visible' Black," a lecture by Robert Reid-Pharr, Ph.D. Program in English professor for The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, 4:30 p.m., Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library.

- Dec. 8: "Ecosystem Evaluation," a Biology/ Botany Seminar Series lecture by Tingting Cai, visiting assistant professor of botany, 11:45 a.m., New London Hall Room 112.

- Dec. 9: "Guitar Recital," a student performance directed by guitar instructor Jim McNeish, 7 p.m., Harkness Chapel.

- Dec. 10: "Jazz at Connecticut College," a performance by the Connecticut College Jazz Ensemble, featuring trombone soloist John Fedchock and a tribute to Art Professor Barkley Hendricks. Directed by Gary Buttery, adjunct assistant professor of music, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. The concert is free for Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

- Dec. 10-11: "BLUR: Dance Department Concert," featuring choreography by guest artists Kyle Abraham and Gabri Christa; Connecticut College faculty Shani Collins, David Dorfman, Heidi Henderson, Adele Myers, Lisa Race and Robyne Watkin; and Connecticut College students. Shows are Dec. 10 and 11, 7:30 p.m., Palmer Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $6 for students and seniors. For tickets call 860-439-ARTS (2787).

- Dec. 13: "December Sweets, Suites and Solos," a Connecticut College Concert Band Performance, directed by Gary Buttery, adjunct assistant professor of music, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. The concert is free for Connecticut College students, staff and faculty.

- Dec. 14: "Connecticut College Percussion and New Music Ensemble Concert," directed by Peter Jarvis, adjunct assistant professor of music, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. The concert is free for Connecticut College students, staff, and faculty.

- Dec. 15: "An Afternoon with Award-Winning Filmmaker Kelly Reichardt," featuring a screening of Reichardt's critically acclaimed 2008 film "Wendy and Lucy," followed by a Q&A, 4:30 p.m., Olin Hall Room 014.

- Dec. 15: "Christmas Vespers: A Service of Lessons and Carols." The service, a candlelight program of lessons and carols, has been a holiday tradition at Connecticut College since 1917. All are welcome, 5 p.m., Harkness Chapel.

- Dec. 15: "Charles Shackford Memorial Student Composers Concert," featuring original pieces by Connecticut College music students, under the director of music professor Arthur Kreiger, 6:30 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Art Center.
