Smalley and friends will be featured from Oct. 17-Nov.14

David Smalley, the Henry B. Plant Professor of Art Emeritus at the College, may have retired from teaching, but he hasn’t retired from sculpting.

This month he’ll exhibit in New London – and he’s bringing some of his past students with him.

From Oct. 17-Nov. 14, an exhibition titled smalley and friends at the Hygienic Art Gallery will feature pieces by Smalley and 15 of his former students and studio assistants.

Featured alumni artists include Lindley Beetz Briggs ’67, Laura Burden ’92, Nat Cohen ’83, Jenn Collins ’98, Jerold Ehrlich ’75, Deborah Vileno Esborn ’86, Matthew Geller ’76, Jonathan Goldman ’80 P’10, David Kenney ’75, Adriene Krefetz ’88, Sharon Myers ’66, Chas Moser ’77, and Meryl Taradash ’74.

“As kids they were full of talent and energy, and it’s a pleasure to see that they still are,” said Smalley of the returning artists.

Smalley, who is beginning his sixth decade of sculpting, considers each piece to be “a struggle, search, and ultimately, a discovery.” “Solving the puzzle of what each piece is going to be is what keeps me on task,” he added.

Raised in New London, Smalley taught at Connecticut College from 1965-2002. He was chair of the art department and a founding co-director of the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology.

An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Oct. 17 from 7-10 p.m. at the Hygienic, located at 83 Bank St. All are welcome.
