Camels Post 3-1 Record at JWU Invitational Newman Honored on All-Tournament Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The Connecticut College volleyball team opened the 2009 season this weekend in the Renaissance City of Providence, Rhode Island at the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Invitational. The Camels won three out of their four matches in a highly competitive field, finishing second out of the five teams participating. Springfield College (7-0) posted a perfect 5-0 mark to win the Invitational.

Sophomore Amy Newman (Los Angeles, Calif.) piled up 61 kills in the 17 games, earning a spot on the All-Invitational Team. Junior setter Marissa DeMais (Hillsdale, N.J.) distributed 156 assists in the tournament.

Friday afternoon, the Camels opened the weekend with a 3-1 victory against tournament host JWU. Game scores were 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, and 25-22. Senior co-captain Lauren Wise (Oakton, Va.) posted a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Amy Newman buried 21 kills and Marissa DeMais distributed 32 assists.

In the night-cap, the Camels held off Bridgewater State in a 3-2 decision. Game scores were 21-25, 21-15, 25-17, 25-20, and 15-6. Wise buried 15 kills to go with three service aces. Newman added 13 kills and three aces while DeMais set the table with 47 helpers for the Camels.

Saturday morning, the Camels grounded the Keene State Owls in a 3-1 triumph. Game scores were 22-25, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-9. Newman had 13 kills and five digs in the victory. Junior middle blocker Chelsea Manning (Cockeysville, Md.) reached double figures with 11 kills. DeMais added 37 set assists.

In the final match, the Camels dropped a 3-1 decision to undefeated Springfield College. Game scores were 27-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19 in favor of the pride. Amy Newman registered 14 kills. Wise added 12 kills and two aces for the Camels. Marissa DeMais accounted for 40 assists and a pair of aces.
