Quad Captain Brendan Moses ยด09
November 14, 2008
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Head Coach David Cornell has released the 2009 Connecticut College men's lacrosse schedule. The Camels are coming off of an exciting season that saw the team post a 10-6 record with a 5-4 mark in NESCAC play. Connecticut College will host nine of its 15 games in New London this season, kicking off the 2009 slate March 7 with a NESCAC game against intrastate rival Trinity College at 1:00 p.m.
Cornell will rely on the leadership of quad-captains Steve Dachille ´10 (Garden City, N.Y.), Sean Driscoll ´10 (Peabody, Mass.), Brendan Moses ´09 (Medfield, Mass.) and Ben Stahl ´09 (Longmeadow, Mass.).
"This is easily the strongest leadership we´ve had since I´ve been here," Cornell said. These guys lead by example on and off the field and in the weight room. They´re a very competitive group and are all vocal as well. Moses and Stahl are returning for their second stint as captains. Dachille was our offensive leader last year as a sophomore and Driscoll is a two sport captain who was voted to be a captain as a junior despite missing all of last year with an injury. These are very impressive young men."
Dachille is a strong, physical attackman who possesses a very hard shot. The 6-3, 220 pound junior has tallied 48 goals and 10 assists in his first two years with the program.
After missing the entire 2007 season to injury, Driscoll has returned to the fold. He can dodge defenders with his explosive speed, agility and balance. A versatile two-sport star, Driscoll made an immediate impact in 2007, putting up 21 goals, 11 assists and 32 points.
Moses enters his second season as a team captain. He has established himself as one of the team´s top short stick defenders. Moses is a vocal leader who has good speed. He has piled up 60 ground balls to go with nine goals and 12 assists in his productive playing career.
Ben Stahl had a breakthrough season in 2008, handling some of the toughest defensive assignments. The 6-1, 205 pound senior has racked up 66 ground balls in his first three seasons in the defensive corps. The coaching staff attributes Ben´s tremendous dedication to the weight room as a catalyst for his improvement on the field.
The Camels open the season with three games in a four day period. After opening the season against Trinity on the seventh, the Camels will welcome Salve Regina University to New London on March 9. The Clark University Cougars will visit Connecticut College on the 10th in a rare back-to-back game situation.
"The first few days are going to be an awesome challenge for us," Cornell said. "We start with a huge rival which is always an emotional game. Then we need to turn around and compete against teams that were very tough opponents for us last year. If we´re going to compete for a NESCAC title, we´re going to have to win back to back games in May. Hopefully we can learn from this experience to help prepare us toward achieving our goal."
The Camels will play their next two games on the road. On March 14, Connecticut College will play McDaniel at Haverford College. This game will be part of a double header which will also pit host Haverford vs. Gettysburg College in the second tilt. It will be a sort of homecoming for the Camels´ as their 2009 roster will consist of at least six student-athletes from the Philadelphia area plus assistant coach Topher Grossman, who played his high school ball at the Haverford School.
On March 17, the Camels will clash with Amherst College in a game that will be played at the New York Institute of Technology on Long Island before traveling to the Green Mountain State to face Middlebury.
"Our spring trip will test us against three excellent opponents," Cornell said. "It will be fun to play against a Centennial Conference school and we´re expecting an exciting atmosphere for that double header. We have our work cut out for us to then turn around and play on Long Island against Amherst and then travel to Vermont to face Middlebury. We´ve lost some heartbreakers in my first two years against those two NESCAC opponents. I know our guys are very excited for those three games."
Connecticut College will close out the month with consecutive home dates against Babson and Bowdoin College.
Connecticut College will play five of its nine NESCAC games in the month of April, hosting Williams on the first and Colby College April 11. The team will play the final two regular season games on the road, visiting Tufts University on the 18th and in-state rival Wesleyan for the regular season finale April 24 in Middletown.
"There are no breaks on a weekly basis with the new NESCAC scheduling format," Cornell said. "We know we need to be focused everyday if we´re going to a successful season."
