November 03, 2008
NEW LONDON, Conn. - James S. Berrien, a 1974 Connecticut College graduate and president and publisher of Forbes Magazine Group, has been elected to serve as chairman of the Connecticut College Board of Trustees for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2009. He succeeds Barbara Shattuck Kohn, a 1972 graduate of the college, who is completing her second three-year term as chair.
"I look forward to continuing the great work that Barbara has done during her tenure," Berrien said. "I am honored to have the opportunity to support Connecticut College in this capacity."
Connecticut College President Leo I. Higdon Jr. said Berrien is a dynamic and engaged leader. "This is an exciting time for Connecticut College, and Jim's leadership will be instrumental as the college continues the public phase of a $200 million comprehensive campaign."
Berrien joined the Forbes Magazine Group in August 1999 as president of Forbes magazine. In 2000, he was named president of Forbes Magazine Group and was appointed publisher in 2003. In this role, Berrien oversees advertising sales, marketing and promotion for Forbes magazine and its supplements, as well as ForbesLife. In August, Berrien announced that he will step down from the day-to-day operations of the group in January 2009 and become chairman of Forbes magazine. In an e-mail announcement to Forbes staff, Berrien said he wanted to spend more time focusing on his trusteeship at Connecticut College, among other things.
A resident of Westport, Conn., Berrien currently serves as the vice-chairman of the Connecticut College Board of Trustees and chairman of the college's comprehensive fundraising campaign. Elected to the board in 2000, Berrien is a past chairman of the Advancement and Communications Committee and a member of both the Committee on Trustees and the Trustee-Student Liaison Committee. Additionally, he is on the boards of directors of the Magazine Publishers Association and Share Our Strength, a national organization dedicated to fighting child hunger.
Berrien was voted chairman-elect at the annual fall meeting of the Connecticut College Board of Trustees Oct. 24 - 25. During the weekend, the college also welcomed three new trustees. They are:
- Kevon Copeland, a 1976 graduate of Connecticut College and a senior business development specialist for the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh.
- Prescott W. Hafner, a 1980 graduate of Connecticut College and managing partner and director of marketing at Hafner Vineyard, a family vineyard and winery in Sonoma County, Calif.
- Thembumenzi Lukhele, a young alumni trustee elected by the Connecticut College class of 2008. Lukhele is a financial analyst with Citi Global Markets and Banking in the Global High Grade Loan Structuring group in New York City.
