Arthur Miller´s ´After the Fall´ to play at Connecticut College

October 31, 2008

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College Theater Department will present a student production Nov. 13-15 of Arthur Miller´s "After The Fall"- a powerful and moving study of a contemporary man struggling to come to terms with himself and his world.

This pain-wracked drama plays like a friend confiding with the audience and follows the intertwining memories of a man´s life through his relationships with the women in his life.

Howard Taubman´s original review in the New York Times called "After The Fall," Miller´s "maturest" play. Thought to be largely autobiographical, the play is said to be based in part on Miller´s 1956-1961 marriage to Marilyn Monroe as well as his romance with Monroe during a period when Miller was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee to explain supposed communist affiliations. Miller refused to name names and Monroe stayed by Miller despite the urgings of various film executives.

"To sit in Mr. Miller´s theater is to be in an adult world concerned with a search that cuts to the bone," Taubman wrote.

Under the direction of Michael Lerner, a 1989 graduate of the Connecticut College Theater Department, "After The Fall" will play at Tansill Theater, Connecticut College´s black box theater. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $6 for students, with performances at 8 p.m. Nov. 13-15 and 2 p.m. Nov. 15 and 16. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 860-439-2606.
