Arboretum hosts seminar for shrinking lawns

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut Arboretum will hold a SALT (Smaller American Lawns Today) called "Naturally Beautiful Lawns," to give tips and techniques for cutting back a lawn´s size to bring it in harmony with nature. The seminar will be held Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Blaustein Humanities Center, Room 210. Registration is required.

Dr. Carl Salsedo, cooperative extension educator, will speak on "Gardening: Cultivating an Enduring Relationship with Nature;" Dr. Stephen Kress, ornithologist and author, will discuss "The Bird-Friendly Garden;" Landscape Designer Christine Cook´s presentation will discuss "Gardening with Mosses;" and Nancy DuBrulle, owner of Natureworks Horticultural Services, will present "Eliminate Your Lawn: Plant a Border."

The seminar will put home gardeners well on the path to having a sustainable and environmentally friendly yard through the use of natives, perennials, mosses and more. A $58 fee for Arboretum members and $68 for the general public covers lunch and breaks. For further information or to register, call 860-439-5060.
