NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College sophomore setter Marissa DeMais of Hillsdale, N.J. has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week. DeMais helped the Camels (15-9, 6-2) extend their winning streak to five matches, leading her team in three conference victories at Trinity College this weekend.
DeMais distributed 10.5 assists per game to go with 2.5 digs per game, adding seven kills, seven aces and four blocks in 12 games for the Camels. DeMais had 44 assists in each of her team's victories Saturday afternoon. She has distributed 587 assists in 60 sets this season, ranking third in the NESCAC with 9.87 assists per game. DeMais has amassed 1,563 assists in her first two years with the Camel volleyball program.
DeMais earned All-Tournament Team honors at the MIT Invitational September 27. She dished out 160 assists to go along with 31 digs and three aces in four matches for her club. Connecticut College head coach Josh Edmed was pleased with DeMais' play this weekend and is looking forward to the team's upcoming matches as they head toward the post-season. "Marissa has been working very hard for us this year to get our offense moving forward," Edmed said. "She has gained the respect and trust of everyone in the program and is making great decisions on the court for us. She understands what we are trying to accomplish from and offensive standpoint and does a nice job of putting our attackers in a position to be successful. Defensively, she has played a big role for us lately and is really starting to understand and excel in her defensive responsibilities. She is an exciting player to watch and I really look forward to seeing all the great things Marissa will bring to the team as we move towards the end of the regular season and in to post-season play."
Off the court, DeMais plays an active role in the New London community. This past year, she volunteered at New London High School, tutoring students in biophysics and chemistry. DeMais writes for the College's newspaper, The Voice. She sits on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Alcohol Policy Committee, and on the Campus Wellness Committee.
In the classroom, DeMais has been honored as a Dean's List student. She is pursuing her degree in biology.
DeMais enjoyed a prolific playing career in the Garden State at Pascack Valley High School. She was honored as the North Jersey Player of the Year on two separate occasions. A two-time All-State performer, DeMais' team captured the state championship in 2005.
DeMais earned three letters as a javelin thrower for the school's track and field program and excelled in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society.
