Connecticut College dance professor resigns

September 15, 2008

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Lan-Lan Wang, professor of dance and acting chair of the dance department, has resigned effective immediately, after it was confirmed she had misrepresented her academic degrees to Connecticut College.

The announcement was made to the college community in an email from Dean of the Faculty Roger Brooks.

"Institutional integrity is of paramount importance to Connecticut College, and so I have accepted her resignation. I am deeply saddened because she has contributed so much to the college over many years," said Brooks in the campus announcement. "Lan-Lan Wang´s accomplishments in dance are very real."

Wang joined Connecticut College in 1994, when she made the transition to Connecticut from a tenure-track position at the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to her position at UCLA, Wang was on the faculty at the University of Iowa. While at Connecticut College, Wang has been a leader in cultural exchanges. She has taken two groups of students to China and has also helped to bring indigenous artists to the college to showcase their work.

Connecticut College was known as the home of the American Dance Festival from 1948 to 1977. In 1971, the renowned Martha Myers founded the dance department. Since that time, Connecticut College has educated hundreds of students who have studied their art in the broad context of liberal arts and sciences.

David Dorfman, professor of dance and chair of the dance department, who had been on sabbatical this semester, returned to Connecticut College and has resumed his role as chair.
