Connecticut College to celebrate Latino Heritage Month

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Connecticut College is celebrating Latino Heritage Month, which runs from Monday, Sept. 15, to Wednesday, Oct. 15, with movies, food, a panel discussion and lectures representing the diversity and contributions of Latinos.

All events are held on the Connecticut College campus and are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

• Monday, Sept. 15: Latino Heritage Month Convocation with student and community performances, student speakers and an address by Eduardo Castell ´87, executive deputy comptroller of New York, 7 p.m., Crozier-Williams 1941 Room.

• Friday, Sept. 19: LA UNIDAD Movie Night, 7 p.m., Pepsico Room, Unity House.

• Tuesday, Sept. 23: "A Passage to Puerto Rico." Frank Graziano, the John D. MacArthur professor of Hispanic studies, provides an illustrated overview of Dominican boat migration at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A session with Raúl Martínez Rosario, whose published narrative account tells the story of his migration from the Dominican Republic to the United States on a boat (or yola), 2:30 p.m, Fanning Hall room 302. Please note: Presentations and Q&A will be in Spanish. • Wednesday, Sept. 24: Discussion with Raúl Martínez Rosario, whose published narrative account tells the story of his migration from the Dominican Republic to the United States on a boat (or yola), 10:25 a.m, Cummings Arts Center room 308. (This event will be in English.)

• Friday, Sept. 26, "Politics of Memory in Hispanic Film," a brown bag lunch with Hispanic Studies Professor Luis M. González, noon, Haines Room in the Shain Library.

• Friday, Sept. 26, LA UNIDAD Movie Night, 7 p.m., Pepsico Room, Unity House.

• Thursday Oct. 2: "Issues Affecting Our Latino Communities," a panel discussion with Angel Fernandez, an active volunteer in immigration issues; Dr. Dianne Kaplan deVries, project director for the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding; and organizational development professional Frances Padilla, 4:30 p.m., Pepsico Room, Unity House.

• Friday, Oct. 3: LA UNIDAD Movie Night, 7 p.m., Pepsico Room, Unity House.
