NEW LONDON, Conn. - Each fall, Art Department faculty at Connecticut College introduce themselves to students with a presentation of faculty works that are as varied and diverse as they are. This year's Faculty Exhibition, on display in the college's Cummings Arts Center Galleries from Sept. 2 through Oct. 7, features paintings, collages, sculptures, photography and digital media. A free, public gallery reception will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10.
As featured artist in this year's exhibition, ceramic sculptor Denise Pelletier, an assistant professor of art at the college, displays three exquisitely crafted and detailed sculptures in Gallery 66. While these elegant black porcelain pieces seem very modern, they were actually inspired by late 19th-century forms. Cleverly playing with the ephemeral nature of shadows, the artist creates a vivid contrast to the permanence of the porcelain sculptures. Pelletier will give a gallery talk at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, just prior to the gallery reception. The talk is also free and open to the public.
In the Manwaring Gallery, displays include a number of works by faculty members Pamela Marks, Maureen McCabe and Andrea Wollensak, as well as by visiting faculty members Cindy Davis, Thomas Mezzanotte, Victor Pacheco and Martha Wakeman. The resulting exhibition is an eclectic mix of personal styles that demonstrate the artistic breadth of this diverse group.
The Cummings Arts Center Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, contact the Connecticut College Art Department at (860) 439-2740.
