Connecticut College onStage season to feature performers from around the globe
August 26, 2008
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The 2008-09 onStage at Connecticut College season kicks off Sept. 20 with a performance of "The Comedy of Errors" by Aquila Theatre Company, the foremost producer of touring classical theatre in the United States.
Called "relevant," "superb" and "clever" by The New Yorker, Aquila´s imaginative and internationally-acclaimed production brings out Shakespeare in bold color.
In another dynamic season, onStage´s 2008-09 line up also includes performers from around the globe, including the Flanders Recorder Quartet - a group whose range and depth of sound has called "a variety of colors that one would have thought impossible on these instruments" by Le Monde de la Musique. Rescuing the recorder from elementary school music class, the quartet promises to return these instruments to a place of glory in its Feb. 26 performance.
The joyful and rhythmic Ladysmith Black Mambazo comes to Connecticut College Feb. 5 with the music of South Africa, as does the world-famous Paul Taylor Dance Company - a group Time Magazine calls "the reigning master of modern dance" on April 3.
Other season highlights include David Dorfman Dance´s Oct. 25 performance of "Disavowal," inspired by the life and legacy of abolitionist John Brown; a Nov. 7 performance by the Brentano String Quartet with pianist Peter Serkin to include works by Haydn, Schoenberg and Beethoven and the traditional Irish ensemble DanĂº March 5, a group whose mix of ancient and modern Irish music plays to standing-room-only audiences throughout Ireland.
"OnStage at Connecticut College strives to bring a broad range of artists to New London - from a variety of genres and backgrounds. It´s our goal to provide the community with a broad spectrum of performance experiences by some of the world´s greatest artists. While the artists are in our community, they do more than just perform. They present workshops in local schools and much more," said Robert Richter, director of arts programming at Connecticut College.
