Emma Tang, a 2008 Connecticut College graduate, has been honored as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse magazine. Tang was named to the First Team of the Track & Field squad.
The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards were established by Diverse magazine in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who excel both academically and athletically.
Serving as a team captain for the Camels this season, Tang vaulted her way into the record books, setting school marks in the pole vault for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Tang reached a height of nine feet, six and one quarters of an inch for her indoor and overall program record and holds the outdoor mark with a vault of nine feet, five and three quarters of an inch. A six-time qualifier for the New England Division III Championship, Tang was named the team´s most valuable player at the conclusion of her junior season.
Tang maintained one of the highest GPA´s in the athletic program as a Dean´s High Honors student. She received the senior Architectural Studies Award this spring and was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic team on four separate occasions during her career.
Tang, a native of Rochester, N.Y., chaired the student-advisory board for physics and was a member of the Sigma Pi Sigma-Physics Honor Society. She also found time to volunteer as a member of "note takers," a group that takes notes for people with various disabilities.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.´s commitment to education, as well as his love for the game of tennis, Diverse magazine invites every college and university in the country to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding student-athletes. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
