June 24, 2008
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College senior Emma Tang of Rochester, N.Y. has been honored as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Magazine. Tang was named to the First Team of the Track & Field squad.
Serving as a team captain for the Camels, Tang vaulted her way into the record books, establishing school marks in the pole vault for the indoor and outdoor seasons. Tang reached a height of nine feet, six and one quarters of an inch for her indoor and overall program record and holds the outdoor mark with a vault of nine feet, five and three quarters of an inch. A six-time qualifier for the New England Division III Championship, Tang was named the team´s most valuable player at the conclusion of her junior season.
Tang maintained one of the highest GPA´s in the athletic program as a Dean´s High Honors student. She received the senior Architectural Studies Award this spring and was named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic team on four separate occasions during her career.
Tang chaired the student-advisory board for physics and was a member of the Sigma Pi Sigma-Physics Honor Society. She found time in her busy scheduled as a two-season student-athlete to volunteer as a member of "note takers," a group that takes notes for people with various disabilities. Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who excel both academically and athletically.
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.´s commitment to education, as well as his love for the game of tennis, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education invites every college and university in the country to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding student-athletes. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; have completed at least one academic year of course work; be enrolled for the fall term of ´07; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses and/or their communities.
