Bishop Announces Team Awards, 2009 Captains

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College track and field program hosted its end of the season cookout April 27. The Camels still have a few weeks of competition remaining but took a brief time out to recognize team and individual achievements for the 2008 indoor and outdoor seasons.

Two Connecticut College athletes were recognized as All-New England Small College Athletic Conference Performers. Sophomore Alex Samma (Ougadougou, Burkina Faso) was awarded for his second place finish in the high jump (6 feet, 5 inches). Freshman Shawn Mulcahy (Lebanon, Conn.) garnered All-Conference honors in the 5K, placing second with a time of 15:15.78 for the Camels.

Head coach Ned Bishop announced the end of season award winners. Seniors Amanda Monnye (Virginia, South Africa) and Matt Dyer (Westford, Mass.) were named most valuable performers. In the most improved category, sophomore Margaret Thayer (Littleton, Colo.) along with seniors Steve Bright (Raynham, Mass.) and Tyler Silverman (Redding, Conn.) were honored.

Seniors Laura Nadelberg (New Providence, N.J.) and Zach Olson (Camelian Bay, Calif.) were awarded as the unsung heroes of the program. In the rookie of the year category, Asia Bento (Roxbury, Mass.), Alyson Brokaw (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) and Shawn Mulcahy were rewarded for their success in their first year with the program.

The Camels will have six captains for the 2009 indoor and outdoor season. Matt Hula (Litchfield, Conn.). Brian Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) and Alex Samma will serve as tri-captains for the men. Joann O´Brien (Plymouth, Mass.), Jill Sergi (Franklin, Mass.) and Margaret Thayer will provide the leadership for the women´s squad.
