Stanislav Andreev ´11 has been business savvy since he was a boy in Bulgaria devising different strategies to exchange his toys for ones he coveted from his friends.
Recently, Andreev´s business accomplishments caught the attention of the Connecticut General Assembly and Governor M. Jodi Rell. A long-time member of Junior Achievement (JA), an international non-governmental organization that promotes financial, career and business education, Andreev was invited to speak at the organization´s Board of Directors meeting at the State Capitol. The General Assembly was so impressed, they congratulated Andreev with a citation of recognition, and Governor Rell presented him with a letter of recognition.
Andreev, a native of Bulgaria, became a member of JA during his sophomore year of high school. Since then, he has competed in national business competitions, managed a virtual company and shadowed the Bulgarian Minister of State Administration and the Minister of Economy and Energy. Andreev said his experience with JA opened his horizons by teaching him how to be a good participant on a team and helping him understand the importance of business ethics.
"Through my experiences with JA, I learned how a company´s success is a function of its ethics, which was new and fascinating to me," Andreev said. "I got really excited and involved."
Andreev´s experience had such an impact on his life that he is determined to expand JA in the New London area. He says the New London community could benefit tremendously from the business and ethics education offered by the organization, and that, as volunteers, Connecticut College students interested in business and economics could also gain hands-on experience managing virtual companies and serving as members of a management team.
An active volunteer himself, Andreev is currently working to recruit other Connecticut College students to serve as mentors to younger students in New London public schools in the upcoming fall semester.
In addition to his work with JA, Andreev is excited about his liberal arts studies and how they will help him contribute to the business world he loves. At Connecticut College, he has developed an interest in international relations, public policy and diplomacy. He is considering a career in international business or working for a business-related government agency or non-profit organization. Regardless of which path he takes, with his passion and commitment, Andreev is sure to be met with success.
