April 07, 2008
NEW LONDON, Conn--Connecticut College men´s basketball coach Tom Satran announced that Billy Karis ´09 (Potsdam, N.Y.) will join Shavar Bernier ´10 (Dover, N.H.) as co-captain in the 2008-2009 season. The announcement came at the team´s year end gathering held at the home of President Leo I. Higdon Jr.
A High Honors Dean´s List student and member of the 2007-2008 NESCAC Winter All-Academic team, Karis has been a stabling presence on the perimeter. Karis contributed 7.8 points per game in 24 starts this winter. He shot a league high 49% from long distance, connecting on 43-of-87 three-point attempts. Karis was tied for ninth in the league with 1.79 triples made per game. He has drained 106 threes in his career for the Camels and has tallied 510 points from the backcourt. Bernier is confident that Karis´ appointment will have a positive impact on the program.
"Billy is more than deserving to be captain," Bernier stated. "He works hard, does all the little things, and is a good leader.".
"Billy will be a great captain," Satran concurred. "He is a model student athlete, a hard worker and a tough competitor. He will set a perfect example in word and deed for our underclassmen. We are fortunate to have him and I am looking forward to coaching him in what I expect to be an exciting season for our program."
