April Arts, Theater and Music events at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Connecticut College will hold a number of art, theater and music events during the month of April. All events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

The schedule of events is as follows:

- "The Ubiquitous Chapbook," an exhibition of chapbooks collected by Richard Dey, whose son Alexander is a junior at Connecticut College, will be on display in the Shain Library during the month of April.

- All Student Art Show and Art Minor Exhibition, featuring works by students with majors or minors in art, on display in the Cummings Arts Center through April 22. A reception will be held April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Cummings Arts Center.

- onStage at Connecticut College presents Phil Kline´s "Zippo Songs," a collection of pieces inspired by the poems that American GIs scratched on their cigarette lighters in Vietnam, and "Fear and Loathing," a song cycle based on the work of Hunter S. Thompson, April 3 at 8 p.m. in the John C. Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $22 for general admission, $20 for seniors and $11 for students. For tickets, call (860) 439-ARTS (2787).

- "Watercolors Through Eastern and Western Eyes: Paintings by Chiang Chien-fei," an exhibition of work by Old Saybrook artist Chiang Chien-fei, will be on display in the Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room in the Shain Library April 10 through August 29. Chien-fei will talk about his exhibit and demonstrate traditional Chinese painting techniques April 10 at 4:30 p.m. in the Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room in the Shain Library.

- Senior Dance Concert, featuring choreography by Connecticut College seniors, April 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and April 12 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $6 for students and seniors. For tickets and more information, call (860) 439 - 2830.

- Faculty Piano Concert featuring Kumi Ogano, adjunct instructor of music, April 11 at 8 p.m. in Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Ogano will be performing "By the Water´s Edge" by Arthur V. Krieger, the Sylvia Pasternack Marx Associate Professor of Music at Connecticut College, as well as music by Chopin and Rachmaninoff. - Piano and Violin Concert featuring adjunct instructor of music Reiko Aizawa and special guest performer Jesse Mills, April 17 at 8 p.m. in Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. For tickets and information, call (860) 439 - 2720.

- David Dorfman Dance will perform "Disavowal," a dance theater project inspired by the life and legacy of abolitionist John Brown, April 18 at 8 p.m. in Myers Dance Studio, College Center at Crozier-Williams. This event is part of Connecticut College´s Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity´s two-day symposium on Race, Space and Memory.

- "Monk´s Mood: A Performance and Meditation on the Life and Music of Thelonius Monk," a dance performance by Thomas F. DeFrantz, professor of theater arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, April 19 at 2:30 p.m. in Myers Dance Studio, College Center at Crozier-Williams. This event is part of Connecticut College´s Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity´s two-day symposium on Race, Space and Memory.

- "The Increased Difficulty of Concentration," a Connecticut College Department of Theater production, in the Tansill Theater April 24 and 25 at 8 p.m., April 26 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and April 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $6 for students and seniors. - Connecticut College Chamber Choir Concert, April 27 at 7 p.m. in Harkness Chapel. The program will include J.S. Bach´s Cantata No. 131 "Au der Tiefe" with chamber orchestra and Benjamin Britten´s "Hymn to St. Cecilia." Tickets are $5 general admission, $3 for students and seniors.
