Connecticut College 9, #16 Tufts University 5 Moran Stops 15 Shots in Camels´ Third Consecutive Victory

MEDFORD, Mass. -The Connecticut College Camels (4-2, 2-2) rolled to their third consecutive victory with a 9-5 triumph against 16th ranked Tufts University (3-3, 1-2) in a NESCAC men´s lacrosse game played on Bello Field Wednesday. Sophomore net-minder Mark Moran (Greenwich, Conn.) had 15 saves to lead the Camels, who featured a balanced offensive attack with eight different players scoring goals. Jesse Stevenson (Marshfield, Mass.) had a goal and two assists and Conor Malangone (Lake Grove, NY) sandwiched two scores around an assist in a three point outing for the winning side.

Long stick midfielder Wes Stephanian (Belmont, Mass.) tallied a team-high six ground balls, netting the first score of his collegiate career. Phips Smith (Far Hills, N.J.) notched the first two points of his career with a goal and an assist while Peter Musser (Lafayette, Calif.) and Dan Gallagher (Wayne, Pa.) combined to win 10 of 18 face-offs for head coach Dave Cornell´s Camels.

The Camels were efficient in the early going, scoring on four of their first six shots to take a 4-0 lead after one quarter of play. Stevenson made it a 5-0 game, netting his fifth goal of the season 1:14 into the second quarter. Chase Bibby (Marblehead, Mass.) broke the ice for Tufts, putting in a goal with 10:28 remaining but Phips Smith answered for the Camels with 5:46 remaining, putting in his first collegiate score and the Camels had regained a four goal advantage at 6-1.

The Jumbos would score three times in the closing 4:59 of the half, cutting the Camel lead to two. Clem McNally (Far Hills, N.J.) provided two of the goals for the hosts and Connecticut College carried a 6-4 lead into the intermission.

Stevenson set up two of the three Camel goals in the third quarter and the visitors capitalized on their 9-to-5 advantage in ground balls to build a 9-4 advantage. The Jumbos cut the lead to four with 4:42 to play on a goal by D.J. Hessler (Monkton, Md.). Moran continued to provide the clutch goalkeeping for the Camels, stopping five Jumbo shots in the final quarter and the visitors were able to hold on for their third straight victory.

Connecticut College will host Amherst College this Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. game in New London.
