Dining hall to premiere ´Favorites from Home´ March 26

March 19, 2008

No matter how much students enjoy the endless buffets, tasty soups, numerous cereal choices and delicious cookies offered in the Connecticut College dining halls, they always admit they miss mom´s cooking. So Connecticut College´s Dining Services has decided to bring students´ favorite home-cooked dishes to campus.

Recently, Dining Services launched the "Favorites from Home" initiative to integrate more original and home-made recipes into the regular dining options at the College´s main dining hall. Students were invited to submit their favorite recipes for consideration. Then, acting as taste testers, the Dining Services staff narrowed down the dozens of submitted recipes. They chose 10 of their favorites to debut during a special "Favorites from Home" dinner in the College´s main dining hall on Wednesday, March 26 - the same week students return to campus after enjoying spring break.

"I´m excited for the dinner," Ami Temarantz ´09 said. "It is perfect timing. We are just getting back to campus and it will feel like we never left home."

Recipes were selected based on the taste, availability of ingredients, originality and the potential to produce in greater quantity. At the dinner, students will be asked to provide their feedback on scorecards and Dining Services will add the most popular dishes to the Fall 2008 menu rotation.

While the idea isn´t a new one - the initiative was actually inspired by a an article in a food service industry magazine - Connecticut College is taking it a step further, Michael McGuirk, supervisor of Dining Services, said. Other schools, such as the University of Connecticut, have only created the dishes for holidays and special events, while Connecticut College will be incorporating the selected recipes into the regular dining schedule, he said.

Dining Services plans to request "home" recipes twice each academic year and hold a dinner each semester. They also hope to publish winning recipes in a printed booklet.
