Men´s and Women´s Teams Set to Kickoff Spring Season in Sunny Orlando

March 05, 2008

Under the direction of head coach Paul Huch, the Connecticut College tennis program continues to improve with each passing season. The Camel men´s and women´s teams are preparing for an exciting spring. Both clubs will kick off the season in Orlando, playing four matches in the Sunshine State.

Junior tri-captain David Kellogg has displayed his versatility and athleticism as a multi-sport standout in soccer and tennis. Huch has been impressed with Kellogg´s great hands and will rely on his junior´s experience and competitive drive at the #1 spot in the rotation. Ted McAusher and freshman Trevor Prophet have been competing for the #2 and #3 spots in the rotation.

Prophet is a natural talent, who made an immediate impact on the soccer program this fall and was honored as the program´s rookie of the year. McAusher has developed one of the strongest forehands in the NESCAC and should continue to develop his game in his second season with the team.

Andrew Watts is holding down the #4 spot in the rotation. Sophomore Reid Larsen and Craig Stanton will compete at #5 and #6 singles. Kellogg and McAusher will join forces to compete at #1 doubles. Trevor Prophet and Andrew Watts will play at #2 with Larson and Stanton pairing up to play #3 doubles.

The Camels were one of the most improved teams in the region last season, finishing the season at 8-8. Huch has been impressed with the team´s pre-season preparation and hopes the club can take the next step forward this spring.

"This would be a great year for us to make a move in the NESCAC," Huch stated. "We have our top two guys back and a couple of impressive freshman join the squad."

With the departure of four seniors, Huch will be patient with the progression of his women´s team.

"This is a really young team but we are improving every day," Huch stated.

Becca Heupel was productive at #1 singles this fall and should continue to advance her game at #1 singles for the Camels. Sophomore Elyssa Emsellem is a confident, conscientious player at #2. Senior captain Danielle Coleman has been a four-year contributor, leader, and role model for this young squad.

Ryan McManus is coming off a successful season on the squash courts and is competing with Jessica Bender for #4 or #5 singles. Caroline Barone and Victoria Leeds are battling it out for #6 singles.

Huch has been impressed with the team´s progression in doubles play. Becca Heupel and Elyssa Emsellem are a formidable tandem with contrasting playing styles at #1 doubles. Danielle Coleman and Ryan McManus are playing second doubles. Freshmen Caroline Barone and Lacey Herchek have received praise from Huch for their work at #3 singles.

The women´s team will open the season Monday, March 10 with a 12:00 p.m. match in Orlando. The men head to the Land of Magic the following week, kicking off their spring March 17 against the Siena Saints.
