Moryan Automatically Qualifies for NCAA Championship in 50 Yard Freestyle Sophomore All-America Sets Facility Record in 100 Yard Free Camels Provisionally Qualify for 2008 NCAA Championship in Seven Events
MIDDLEBURY, Vt.--The Connecticut College men´s swimming and diving program competed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) at Middlebury College this weekend. Sophomore All-America Grant Moryan (Westfield, N.J.) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.67 in the prelims. The Camels recorded seven NCAA B cut times at the Championship, finishing fifth with 832 points.
Williams College won the championship with a score of 1860.5 points. Tufts University was second with 1489.5 points. Amherst College finished third with 1399 points.
On the heels of his NCAA Qualifying time, Moryan finished second in the championship final of the 50 yard freestyle event with a time of 20.70 seconds. In the 100 yard freestyle, Moryan captured the NESCAC Championship, setting a facility record with a time of 45.56 seconds. The finish met the provisional qualification for the NCAA Championship. Moryan posted a time of 1:43.13 in the 200 yard free en route to a fifth place finish for Connecticut College.
Sophomore All-America Pat Troy (Bradford, N.H.) finished second in the 50 yard butterfly with a time of 22.54 seconds. In the 100 yard butterfly, Troy provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship, posting a time of 50.11 seconds in a third place finish for Connecticut College. In the prelims of the 100 yard free, Troy met another NCAA Provisional cut, posting a time of 46.25 seconds. Troy went on to place sixth in the event with a time of 46.54 seconds.
The Camels provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in four relay events. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Camel foursome of Pat Troy, Brian Finnerty (Garden City, N.Y.), co-captain Kyle Bartro (Beverly, Mass.), and Grant Moryan cruised to a third place finish with a time of 1:23.50. Kyle Bartro, Sam Perley (Charlotte, N.C.), Pat Troy and Grant Moryan teamed up for a third place performance in the 200 yard medley relay, logging a time of 1:34.78.
In the 400 yard medley relay, Kyle Bartro, Ian Barnes (Davis, Calif.), Pat Troy and Grant Moryan finished fourth with a time of 3:27.98. Pat Troy, Brian Finnerty, Kyle Bartro and Moryan took fourth in the 400 yard free relay, logging a time of 3:07.44.
Senior co-captain Alex Wood (East Windsor, N.J.) finished fifth in the 1,000 yard free, posting a time of 9:54.51. Wood placed sixth in the mile, logging a time of 16:33.65. Kyle Bartro recorded a time of 52.40 seconds to place eighth in the 100 yard butterfly.
The NESCAC office will formally announce its All-Conference team Tuesday. The top three scorers in each event garner All-Conference accolades.
