Connecticut College catches "RecycleMania"

February 13, 2008

Connecticut College is a frontrunner in RecycleMania, a national 10-week recycling competition between colleges and universities.

This year, the college will contend with 401 colleges and universities - nearly double the number of schools participating last year. The competition began Jan. 27 and will run through April 5.

In the first week of competition, Connecticut College ranked in the top 10 in the "Per Capita Classic" section of the competition, recycling 4.5 pounds of material per person. In the waste minimization category, Connecticut College ranked 62nd.

This is the third year Connecticut College has participated in RecycleMania. In previous years, the college has finished in the top 25. The goal of RecycleMania is to reduce campus waste disposal and increase campus recycling. Connecticut College faculty, staff and students are working towards that goal by cutting down on waste production - printing on both sides of paper and using reusable containers instead of disposables, for example - and recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel, glass and plastics Nos. 1 and 2.

RecycleMania is organized and operated by university recycling coordinators and endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency´s WasteWise Program, the National Recycling Coalition´s College and University Recycling Council (CURC) and the National Wildlife Federation´s Campus Ecology Program.
