The Connecticut College women´s basketball team has joined forces with the Women´s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to promote breast cancer awareness, dedicating the Feb. 5 game against the Coast Guard academy to the "Think Pink" cause.
Players on both teams will wear pink warm up t-shirts and pink shoelaces and fans are encouraged to wear pink attire to show support for this global initiative. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Connecticut College senior tri-captain Katy Serafin said she and her teammates are looking forward to spreading the word about breast cancer.
"Basketball players believe the best offense is a good defense," Serafin said. "Prevention is the key to fighting the war on breast cancer."
The WBCA began "Think Pink" in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness on campuses and in the community. Last year, more than 120 schools helped make the inaugural year of the WBCA´s "Think Pink" a success.
Connecticut College head coach Laura Hungerford said she is looking forward to the "Pink Out."
"Everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer," Hungerford said. "We want to do something to help those in need and raise awareness in our community."
The Camels are asking that any donations be made to the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation (TBBCF) of New London. The TBBCF is a nonprofit group dedicated to providing critical funding to researchers in search of a cure for breast cancer.
