Connecticut College to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 25

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College community will gather Jan. 25 to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with performances by staff, faculty and students, as well as the presentation of the first Dr. Martin Luther King Service Award and Dr. Martin Luther King Essay Contest awards.
This event is at 4 p.m. in Evans Hall at Connecticut College. It is free and open to the public.
The college´s new Dr. Martin Luther King Service Award will be presented to staff, faculty and students who uphold the legacy of Dr. King´s work with a commitment to social justice and service to underrepresented communities.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Essay Contest, which is also new this year, challenged students from local elementary and middle schools to write a one-page reflective essay on the achievements of Dr. King and the impact those achievements have had in their own lives. Prizes will be awarded to two fifth graders and two seventh graders during the ceremony.
Connecticut College has traditionally scheduled campus events commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after the federal holiday. This ensures students who were off-campus during winter break can attend, and also gives the college an opportunity to more closely integrate the King commemoration with the variety of events planned at the college for February´s Black History Month.
