Winter sports off to a great start
January 17, 2008
The Connecticut College winter sports season is in full swing and Camel fans have plenty to cheer about.
The Camel hoop teams have combined for an 18-6 record in the early season and the women´s hockey team is 3-1-2 in NESCAC play. The men´s hockey team opened the season with a thrilling tie against the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Middlebury College. Swimming and diving, squash and track and field are in full swing. Here´s a quick look at what´s going on in the athletic scene at Conn.
Head coach Tom Satran ´94 has directed the men´s basketball team to its best start since the 2000-2001 season, with an impressive record of 11-2. The team has already defeated two opponents that qualified for the 2007 NCAA Tournaments in St. Lawrence University and the Coast Guard Academy. Senior forward Charles Stone ranks among the top-10 in the conference in five major statistical categories.
Meanwhile, women´s basketball has secured a 9-4 record. Senior Katy Serafin reached a career-milestone Nov. 29, netting her 1,000th point in a victory against Western Connecticut State University. Currently, Serafin has tallied 1,109 points and ranks fifth in NESCAC scoring with 15.1 points per game. Teammate Lindsay Michel is ranked fifth in NESCAC assists and steals, averaging 3.92 helpers and 2.38 steals per game. In the classroom, Michel was recently honored as a Winthrop Scholar, the highest academic honor awarded by the college, and in May, she will be officially initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society of undergraduate higher education.
Men´s hockey is seventh in the NESCAC, while the Camel women are one of the most improved teams in the country with an overall record of 5-6-3 and a conference record of 3-1-2. Already, they have already surpassed their NESCAC win and point total from the 2006-2007 season, with 10 games still remaining. If the Camels hold on to fourth place or move up, they would host their first playoff game in program history.
In squash, the Camel men have a record of 4-4 and scored consecutive victories against George Washington University and Hobart. Junior Ryan McManus has not dropped a game in an undefeated season at No. 3 singles.
The Camel swimming and diving teams recently returned from their annual winter sojourn to Naples, Florida. In just two meets, sophomore All-Americans Grant Moryan and Pat Troy combined for nine individual event victories, leading the team to wins in both. Sophomores Maureen Costello and Caitlin Munns also won multiple events for the Camel women.
Seniors Emma Tang and Keith Drake and Sophomore Alyson Brokaw each earned invitations to the New England Division III Championship with outstanding performances in track and field. Tang finished second in the pole vault, Drake posted a time of 4:21.89 in the mile and Brokaw attained the winning time of 9.11 seconds in the 55 meter hurdles.
