onStage at Connecticut College presents Quartetto Gelato Nov. 30

November 05, 2007

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Quartetto Gelato, a dominant force in the international "new classical" scene, will perform Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. in the John C. Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center, at Connecticut College.

Thrilling audiences with the mastery of six instruments and a brilliant operatic tenor, Quartetto Gelato performs an assorted repertoire of classical masterworks, operatic arias and the sizzling energy of tangos, gypsy and folk songs.

In 1996, the group was named "Debut Artist of the Year" by National Public Radio´s popular "Performance Today" program. The panel of music critics who presented the award described the quartet as "an amazing ensemble that achieves the nearly impossible: they play salon music with real style and classical music with real precision; great chops and a commitment in all that they play."

Quartetto Gelato has performed in sold-out concerts in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The group´s first DVD, "Quartetto Gelato: A Concert in Wine Country!" was broadcast on PBS stations throughout the United States earlier this year and will be released commercially in March.

Before the show, at 4 p.m., the members of Quartetto Gelato will give a free lecture and demonstration, also in Evans Hall.

Tickets for the concert are $22; seniors $20; students $11. For ticket information, call 860-439-ARTS (2787).
