Connecticut College professor receives $93,636 to conduct computer science research

October 22, 2007

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Janardhan Iyengar, a visiting assistant professor in computer science at Connecticut College, was awarded a $93,636 grant from Cisco Systems´ Collaborative Research Initiative to study issues related to internet data transfer.

Increasingly, computers are being connected to the Internet through multiple points of connectivity; for example, a computer may be connected simultaneously through wired and wireless connections. "Using both connections can improve data transfer rates, but there is a catch," Iyengar said. "This improvement may happen at the cost of unfairly reduced data rates for other users sharing the same Internet paths, or more specifically, for other flows sharing the same network bottlenecks."

Iyengar´s study, "Shared Bottleneck Detection and Response Techniques for Concurrent Multipath Transfer," will focus on methods for detecting these shared bottlenecks, understanding their implications and investigating ways for a data sender to respond when such situations occur.

The Cisco Collaborative Research Initiative provides grants to researchers and educators to study pressing issues, topics, and problems in the area of computer networking. Cisco Systems Inc. is a worldwide leader in networking, transforming how people connect, communicate and collaborate.
