The Connecticut College women´s cross country team placed three of the top 14 finishers in their home invitational at Harkness State Park in Waterford on Sept. 22, cruising to victory in the 19 team field with a score of 73 points.
Faye McKenna (Amston, Conn.), Jill Sergi (Franklin, Mass.) and Melissa Lacey (Amherst, Mass.) were named to the All-Invitational Team for their performance on the 6k course. McKenna led the way for the Camels, posting a time of 23:14 for a seventh place finish, earning All-Invitational honors for the third consecutive week. Sergi and Lacey finished 13 and 14 with respective times of 23:46 and 23:54 for the hosts.
The Stonehill College Skyhawks finished second in the race with 75 points. Colby College scored 81 points en route to a third place finish. It had been five years since the Camels had been victorious in their home invitational.
Head coach Ned Bishop was pleasantly surprised with his team´s performance at this early stage of the season.
"It was totally unexpected for everybody that we won today," Bishop enthusiastically stated. "Even watching the race, I knew that we had run really well, but I did not have any clue that we had won until the scores were posted."
Senior Heather Stanish (Guilford, Conn.) missed the All-Invitational team by just one second, finishing 17 overall with a time of 23:56. Colleen MacPhee (Maplewood, N.J.) was the fifth Camel scorer, placing 22 with a time of 24:07.
Janneke Quick (Winchester, Mass.) was 26 overall with a time of 24:17 for Connecticut College. Caitrin Herdic (Champlain, N.Y.) posted a time of 24:20, finishing 27th for the Camels.
The Camels had not defeated Colby College since the year 2000. Connecticut College defeated Brandeis and Stonehill after falling to both schools at UMass Dartmouth last week.
