Barklis/Coleman Bring Home Gold for Camels from ECAC Championship Camels Bring Their A Game to Tennis Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I.--The Connecticut College women's tennis team opened the 2007 season with the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Championship Tournament at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. The senior doubles tandem of Kari Barklis (La Jolla, Calif.) and Danielle Coleman (Westfield, N.J.) delivered the hardware for the Camels by winning the gold medal in doubles play. The Camels finished second overall in the five team field with 8.5 points. Division 1 Lehigh University won the overall title with 12.5 points scored for the weekend.

The fourth seeded duo of Barklis and Coleman opened the weekend with an 8-2 victory against Andrea Dalton and Michelle Peters of RPI. Sunday morning, the Camel tandem knocked off the top seeded Lehigh Mountain Hawks' Alexis Jacobi and Keira Murasko-Blank, 8-6. In the finals, the Camels tamed the Lafayette Leopards' Jacqui Bonder and Nancy Parker with an 8-1 triumph.

In the first singles flight, fifth seeded freshman Rebecca Heupel (Eden Prairie, Minn.) notched a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory against fourth seeded Progga Das of RPI before falling in the semifinal round to top seeded Olivia Fleszar of New Hampshire. Fifth seeded sophomore Elyssa Emsellem (Potomac, Md.) posted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against second seeded Sarah Sykes of Lafayette in the second singles competition. In the second round, Emsellem was defeated 7-5, 6-4 in a closely contested match against fourth seeded Christine Roe of RPI.

Sophomore Jessica Bender (Westfield, N.J.) earned the third seed in the third singles flight. Bender collected a 6-1, 6-2 opening round win over RPI's Kristin Weiss before falling in the semifinal round to second seeded Allie Seranko of Lafayette, 6-2, 6-4. Lacey Herchek (Concord, Mass.) drew the number three seed in the fourth singles flight. Herchek rolled past Sarah Wohlfarth of UNH, 6-0, 6-2. In the second round, second seeded Rachel Rohinsky of Lafayette collected a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Herchek.
