Art history professor Robert Baldwin discovers love of floral photography

As an art history professor, Robert Baldwin has taken thousands of photos for art slides and digital images. But since 2005, he has also taken pleasure in photography for his own personal enjoyment.
Baldwin has "dabbled" in the hobby since childhood, but after seeing a professional artist´s floral photography two years ago, he decided, "I can do this." He has accumulated a large collection of flower photos he took at local gardens in Old Lyme, East Lyme, and Norwich, twenty-five of which are displayed at the Waterford Public Library´s main lobby until July 30.

Baldwin´s art history specialties include landscape art, which may explain his preference for garden and landscape photography. For Baldwin, however, this hobby is solely personal. He enjoys each step of the photography process - walking through gardens to find a subject, taking a photo, and hanging the finished works in his house or giving them as gifts to friends and family.
Flowers have become one of Baldwin´s favored photography subjects for the simple reason that "flowers don´t complain when you ask them to pose … unlike people."
