The chemistry of compost in Arboretum lecture, workshop Nov. 18

New London, Connecticut - The Connecticut College Arboretum is offering a lecture/workshop "A Chemist Takes A Closer Look At Compost" with Robert Rafka, Chemist at Pfizer and Assoc. Res. Fellow in Separation Science Group on Saturday, November 18th, from 10a.m. to Noon at the Connecticut College Olin Science Center, Room 311.

In this lecture-workshop, Dr. Bob Rafka will speak on the processes that convert yard waste into humus and assess the risks and/or benefits of selected organic source materials. He will also discuss the beneficial effects of humus and its maintenance through good culture practices.

Dr. Rafka will also analyze some special organic raw materials that can be added to the pile in order to create superior compost as well as the limits of composting itself. A short hands-on unit will also be conducted. Participants are encouraged to bring along a sample of their own compost for analysis and discussion.
