75th anniversary celebration for Connecticut College Arboretum, June 9

A celebration on June 9th from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Connecticut College Arboretum Members´ and Friends´ night will mark the Arboretum´s 75th anniversary. Founded in 1931, the Arboretum continues to grow and refine its mission of teaching, research, conservation, collections, recreation, and public education. Members and the general public are invited to help celebrate in the Olin Science Center on the Connecticut College campus.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Robert Thorson, Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut, speaking on "Stone Walls: Their Role in Human Ecology, Woodland Habitat, and Cultural History." His book, Stone by Stone: The Magnificent History in New England´s Stone Walls, won the 2003 Connecticut Book Award in the nonfiction category, and will be on sale after the program.

Dr. Richard Goodwin, Professor Emeritus of Botany and second director of the Arboretum from 1944 to 1965, and Sally Taylor, Professor Emeritus of Botany, will both be present to share some of their memories of the earlier years of the Arboretum.

"Capturing the Beauty of Nature - 2006" photo contest awards will be presented, and all of the entries will be on exhibit in the Olin Lounge. The exhibition will continue through June 18th, and is also open daily to the public.

A celebratory reception will be held in Olin Lounge after the program with anniversary cake, refreshments, and free Arboretum 75th anniversary mugs, while the supply lasts.

Visitors may come early at 6 p.m. and walk with Arboretum Director Glenn Dreyer to the Shain Library for a private showing of the Arboretum´s historical exhibit on display in the Shain Library foyer. Participants should meet by the Blue Sculpture in front of the Olin Science Center for the walk. They should not go directly to the library, as only the people in the tour will be admitted to the library.
