Connecticut College to build new fitness center

December 18, 2007

Connecticut College today announced it will build a new fitness center overlooking the Thames River and turf field at the college´s Athletic Complex. The center will feature leading edge fitness equipment and will more than triple the amount of exercise and wellness space at the college.

"This state-of-the-art facility will benefit the entire college community, and greatly enhance the workout experience for students, faculty and staff," said President Leo I. Higdon Jr. "We are extremely pleased that due to the support of generous donors, we can move swiftly ahead with this project."

The $8 million construction project is financed entirely through donations to the college, including a lead $3.5 million gift and several additional seven-figure gifts. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2008 and be completed by the fall of 2009.

The new fitness center will be approximately 6,500 square feet, fully equipped with the most modern equipment to suit all fitness levels. Soaring glass walls facing the Thames River and Silfen Field will provide an abundance of natural light and commanding views of the river and sports contests.

In addition to the new construction, the college also is renovating its existing fitness center into 2,500 square feet of space for aerobics, dance and other group exercise and sports programming.

Additionally, the college is making significant upgrades to the entire Athletic Complex, including a number of specific improvements to the Charles B. Luce Field House that are designed to enhance overall first impressions for athletes and visitors, and call attention to the Athletic Hall of Fame, an increasingly important point of focus for alumni, parents and the campus community.
